They are still here, just in a new place!

World of Genesis

by Dave Negrin

Much has changed since we last sat down with guitarist Daryl Stuermer roughly five years ago. At the time, Stuermer, who was hard at work on recording his fusion-influenced album, Retrofit , had re-established himself as more of a contemporary jazz player than a rock guitarist, with a string of predominantly smooth jazz orientated solo projects. Daryl had not worked with Genesis on tour as a collective since the early '90s, and there were no signs of any sort of reunion on the horizon.

Fast forward to 2006. Daryl Stuermer releases Rewired: The Electric Collection , a compilation showcasing some of Stuermer's more rock-fusion orientated solo material. This was followed with 2007's Go , a new Daryl Stuermer solo album much more in the vein of what a Genesis fan would salivate to hear from Daryl...

Daryl Stuermer on the GO (the best interview to date on the career and the music)

For 30 years, Genesis and Phil Collins have relied on guitarist Daryl Stuermer's virtuoso skills to help deliver their revered sounds to sold-out arenas and stadiums worldwide. He replaced Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett in 1977 and has shared guitar and bass duties with founding member Mike Rutherford on almost every tour the group has mounted since. He recently reunited with Genesis for its 2007 Turn It On Again tour that brought together the line-up of Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins for the first time since Collins' departure from the group in 1996. Stuermer also serves as Collins' guitarist of choice, having played lead guitar on every tour and album he's released since beginning his solo career in the early '80s. In addition, Stuermer has several co-writing credits on Collins' solo material. Banks and Rutherford have also used the Milwaukee-based musician on their solo efforts.    Full interview

GENESIS Turning it on again (Mike Rutherford speaks on Daryl's influence in GENESIS)

British prog-rock titans Genesis surprised much of its global fan base when it announced it was reuniting its hit-wielding line-up of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks for a 2007 European and North American tour. Collins last toured with Genesis in 1992 and departed from the group in 1996 to focus on his solo career, making it 15 years since the trio had worked together. And with the exception of the 1997 Calling All Stations album and its accompanying European tour featuring Banks, Rutherford, and new vocalist Ray Wilson, Genesis itself has been inactive for nearly 10 years.

Collins, Rutherford, and Banks, along with long-time touring musicians Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson, are doing the gigs without a new album to support. The goal is to have fun, reestablish the band's repertoire, and remind the world that Genesis live is still a force to be reckoned with. To that end, the group is performing a cross-section of music that goes well beyond its many top-10 radio staples, like "I Can't Dance" and "Invisible Touch."

Daryl Stuermer in conversation with Genesis-News.Com

He once described himself as a permanent part-time member of Genesis - a role he has truly enjoyed for almost 30 years now. Daryl Stuermer has played bass and guitar on all Genesis Tours between 1978 and 1992. Besides that, he is also the longest serving member in Phil Collins' solo-band.

On Milwaukee Interview
Three months ago, Milwaukee guitarist Daryl Stuermer traveled to New York for a family reunion
. OK, it wasn't really a family reunion. But, it felt like one.
Stuermer met up with his former bandmates in Genesis -- Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Chester Thompson -- and the idea was to get together, play some music and see if everyone was interested in reuniting for a tour in 2007.

Retrofit Review From Jazz Nation by D.J. Fazio

From his early fusion days with Jean Luc Ponty to the most recent world tour with Phil Collins, Daryl Stuermer has proven himself a guitarist, composer, producer and musician’s musician. Retrofit, is his 5th solo project (4th on the Urban Island Music label) and not a retrospective per se, it is instead a gathering of the musical experiences garnered along the way.

Guitarist Daryl Stuermer shares another side of Genesis
By Andy Argyrakis

It's two hours before his Chicagoland concert and guitarist Daryl Stuermer is finishing a simple afternoon snack in Elgin Community College's modestly adorned, yet comfortable dressing room.  As I enter the room and am introduced to the musician, he immediately rises from the table, shakes my hand and rather than dismissing me as just another reporter, he seems interested, almost excited to hear the questions I'm about to ask.  After close to an hour of conversation, it's clear that Stuermer's proud of his past, but doesn't dwell in it, while making every effort to make quality music for his current generation of fans.

AA:  What were your expectations when you started out as a musician?
