Questions & Answers

Hi Daryl:

First and foremost, thanks for all your music, and for helping keep Genesis 'glued together' live.

I have a couple questions for you:

Are the Lace-Sensor Gold pickups that you use the Hot Gold models?

You mentioned "They seem to work especially well in live performance" .  Does that mean you use different pickups for recording to get a traditional single coil sound?  I have read that the LS Golds have a more pronounced mid-range than true alnico 5 single coils and to some people sound 'muddy'.  Do you find this to be true?

Do you use standard stock wiring in your Strats or do you have customwiring such as a tone control that brings out the mids?

That's a beautiful Strat you play on page 208 of Chapter and Verse, which I believe is the same guitar you play on the Duke tour.  Who made that guitar, and what special wiring/pickups does it have?

Again many thanks and happy Thanksgiving!

Brent

Hello Brent,

Are the Lace-Sensor Gold pickups that you use the Hot Gold models?
I'm not sure. I bought the guitar in the 80's. Maybe that helps.

You mentioned  "They seem to work especially well in live performance" .  Does that mean you use different pickups for recording to get a traditional single coil sound?

The subtle differences in pickups are more pronounced in recording. When I am recording I will use several Strats or other brands. The traditional single coil has a more natural sound which may be what is necessary for specific songs. Live performance is much more forgiving, so the Lace-Sensors can probably cover it all. Also Lace-Sensor pickups tend to be less noisy in a uncontrollable environment.

I have read that the LS Golds have a more pronounced mid-range than true alnico 5 single coils and to some people sound 'muddy'.  Do you find this to be true?

In the end it all depends on what sound you're looking for.

Do you use standard stock wiring in your Strats or do you have customwiring such as a tone control that brings out the mids?

I use standard wiring on the traditional single coil Strats and custom wiring on the Lace-Sensor pickup Strats.

That's a beautiful Strat you play on page 208 of Chapter and Verse, which I believe is the same guitar you play on the Duke tour.  Who made that guitar, and what special wiring/pickups does it have?

It's a Suntech Strat style guitar. I believe I did use it on the Duke tour.

Hi Daryl.

My questions:

Why do you load your strats with Lace-Sensor Gold pickups and which Tonebone pedal did you use for the Firth of Fifth solo on the Turn It On Again Genesis tour - the Classic or the Hot British?

Thanks.

Marco

Hello Marco,

*Lace Sensors are true single-coil pickups; however, internally they are different from classic single coils. The chief difference is that the coil is surrounded by metal barriers which blocks electro-magnetic interference such as power line hum. These barriers also help concentrate the magnetic field, allowing weaker magnets to be used, which results in less string pull. Less string pull, in turn, means truer pitch and intonation, and superior sustain . They seem to work especially well in live performance.
*I use the Tonebone Hot British Distortion pedal on "Firth Of Fifh".

Hi Daryl,

I have a couple of questions for you. First, I was wondering what drew you to nylon strings?  Was it the sound or the feel or something else? Second, is there any chance that you may, in the future, publish your compositions on sheet music?

Regards,
Gina

Hello Gina,

What drew me to playing nylon string guitar was the sound. The sound and feel of the strings makes you play a certain way. It allows me to stylistically approach songs differently.
To answer your second question - I haven't given much thought to publishing my songs on sheet music.

Best Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl ,

While watching your solo band several times I've always been amazed at how interactive you are with your effects pedals during the live performance of songs.  About your effects, what particular characteristics and settings of the Hot British Tonebone prompted you to put it on your pedalboard and can you give some examples of songs from GO and Retrofit where it is featured?  Secondly, where in your effects chain do you like to put your volume pedal? Best wishes for the New Year and hope to see more gigs scheduled again this year in the Milwaukee area.

Regards, Steve K.

Hello Steve,

I like the Tonebone/Hot British Distortion or Plexitube Distortion pedal for many reasons. First of all the warm sustain. It's one of the quietest overdrive and/or distortion pedals I own. I find most Radial pedals to be designed with sound quality, easy operation, and durability in mind. True bypass is a nice bonus as well.

Your settings will always be different depending on what amp and amp settings you use.
These are the settings that I use with my Hot British or Plexitube Distortion pedal.
  LEVEL - 3 o'clock
HIGH - between 1 & 3 o'clock
LOW - 12 o'clock
CONTOUR - 12 o'clock
DRIVE - between 12 & 1 o'clock
TOP END - DARK
VOICING - FAT
MID BOOST - OUT.

I usually put my volume pedal first in the pedalboard chain, although the guitar goes through a Radial Big Shot EFX True-Bypass Effects Loop Switcher first. The Hot British or Plexitube is positioned immediately after the volume pedal. You can check out a photo of my various pedalboards in the Gear Talk section on my website.  http://www.darylstuermer.com/gear.htm

I used the Hot British Distortion for all the lead and solo sounds on "Go"! I didn't have the Hot British Distortion when I recorded "Retrofit". On that album I used an Ibanez Tube King or a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 for overdrive.

Hello again Daryl!

I was just looking through the Chapter & Verse Genesis book.  On pages 205-206 there is a picture of you and Mike going through a tune on acoustic guitars before a 1978 'And then there were three' show in Ohio.  Also in the shot is a double-neck guitar that I've seen you using in another photo from that same tour.  I don't think you used it again on any tours after that so my question is ... which song did you play that instrument on?  (I know I know ...  it's a long time ago, but you were always the one with a good memory for the old tunes - when Mike would forget even his own chords!!!) ha ha

All the best Daryl,
Richard Nagy

Hello Richard,

I didn't realize that I played my double-neck guitar (12 & 6 string) with Genesis until you brought up the photo in the Chapter & Verse book. First I thought that maybe it was just taken on the road as a spare, but never played in live. Then I found that other photo on page 228 of me playing it in live performance. I had to search my brain to remember what song I could have possibly played that double-neck. The song would have been "Say It's Alright Joe". Mike and I would have played 12 string on the main verses, then Mike would switch to bass (on his double-neck) for the middle section. The "And Then There Were Three" tour was the only Genesis tour that I ever played that guitar. There must be a video of this song performed live somewhere in 1978.

Hello Daryl ,

Daryl do you know when the new genesis live dvd will be coming out? Do you have any new projects that you are working on? Will Genesis be touring again next year? Daryl Happy holidays and happy new year to you and your family.

Brian Whelan

Hello Brian ,

Below are the answers to your questions. It's best I can do at this time.

Daryl do you know when the new genesis live dvd will be coming out?
I believe it will be sometime in March 2008.
Do you have any new projects that you are working on?
I'm thinking about a new album - but nothing written or demoed yet.
Will Genesis be touring again next year?
Not sure - but I hope so! Keep your fingers crossed.
Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

First off, I saw the show on 10/4/07 and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Everything seem to fall into place. It was flawless. A very fitting ending to a great band. I have been a fan from the very beginning and I have never been disappointed.

Secondly, I am planning on learning how to play the guitar at the ripe young age of 54 and was wondering what would be the best choice of guitar. I am looking at a Fender Stratocaster or Yamaha Gigmaker EG. I like the inexpensive price of the Yamaha, but I feel that the Fender would be a better choice in the long run.

Any suggestions would be helpful......... See you at Shank Hall - Doug

Hello Doug ,

I have always loved Fender Strats. Since you are a beginner I would suggest the Fender Squire Standard Stratocaster. It's a much cheaper way to go and still a good guitar.

Hi Daryl,

I come from germany and I saw the Genesis Show in Leipzig. It was
beautiful show. There was a special moment when Phil announced Carpet
Crawlers. Exact when Carpet Crawlers started a drizzle felt from the
sky. It was very emotional and it support the song in a special way....
To my question, I play guitar since 1999. I had never heard such a great
solo sound like yours on Carpet Crawlers and Ripples. How do you made it ?

Are there plans for you to tour with your band around germany ?

Best wishes from the harz mountains

Christian

Hello Christian,

On both "Carpet Crawlers" and "Ripples" I combine 2 effects pedals.
For the overdrive sustain effect I use a Fulltone Soul-Bender.
For the echo/delay effect I use a Boss DD-5 digital delay - I set the
delay tempo in eighth notes.
Part of the effect is how you use the volume pedal. I bring in each
note with the volume pedal. In other words - I pick when the pedal is
up and then lower the pedal. This way the note comes in smooth
without the pick attack.

You can see a photo of my pedalboard set up on my website under Gear
Talk
.

There are no specific plans to play Germany yet, but I hope to get
there in the future.

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Daryl,
Now that the tour is over, do you feel that Genesis have now given its fans a proper goodbye?
I ask this because I was always struck by your comments on the Songbook DVD where you noted that the We Can't Dance tour was not a proper and definitive goodbye statement to the fans.
I attended the BMO Toronto show and as I left the stadium I felt content in that: "The boys have given us a respectful goodbye..."
Do you think that Genesis have now satisfied to a great extent our perhaps mutual need to say "farewell"?

A Life Long Fan
Joe Zammit

Hello Joe,
Yes.........I think Genesis finally gave the fans a respectful goodbye. The 1992 tour was never advertised as a final tour because no one knew that it was going to be. I'm glad that you felt that the boys gave you a respectful goodbye in Toronto. It was a great show and a great tour. I'm hoping that it's not the last time we play together.

Best Regards,
Daryl

I've been a huge fan of yours since your days at the Bull Ring.Ive been a jazz/blues guitarist around Wisconsin for 49 years and have opened for the likes of Ray Charles,James Brown,Moody Blues.and so many more.
I know youve been a Boogie user for many years(as am I)but I was wondering how you run your 2 Mark I AMPS.Is one for the clean sound and one for a dirtier sound? It sounds great.Youve made Wisconsin very proud and I loved your interview on WKTI.

Keep rockin Daryl
          Gary Grode

Hello Gary,

The 2 Boogie's are set up with an identical clean sound and volume
level. I use a Tonebone/Hot British distortion pedal for my lead/solo
sound. I run a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble (in stereo) through the Mark
1's.

Best Regards,

Daryl

Daryl, Always enjoy your work, both with Genesis and solo.  I look forwad to seeing you play in Columbus, September 22!  One question I have is why are they playing nothing from Abacab?  Abacab itself would provide an excellent opportunity for the 'double drum stuff' that Phil has mentioned. In any case, I look forward to the show, and thank you for the wonderful music.

Thanks! Ken M.

Hello Ken,
I really don't know why we don't play anything from Abacab, but we did rehearse the song "Abacab". When it came time to make a final set list, it didn't make it (as well as many other songs we rehearsed). In the end there will always be songs people wished we played. The show is around 2 1/2 hours and I think there are plenty of moments in the show featuring Phil & Chester playing together.

Thanks for your question.  See you in Columbus!

Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

It was great seeing your shows in Munich and Rome this summer.  It was also very exciting to meet you at the airport/on the plane for the flight back to O'Hare the day after!!  It was kind of funny appearing to be the only one reacting to your presence at the boarding gate.  I wanted to say to everyone "do you know who this guy is?!" J   Especially to the kid with the guitar over his shoulder. Thanks again for the pick- it will be included with my Genesis ticket stub as part of a little 'collage' I make for that whole Euro trip.

I want to see you guys in Chicago and there are three shows.  So my question is: What is typically the best night to see you; the opening or last night?

  A big fan - Dan Z

Hello Dan,
I do remember you and your wife...........and the young guitar player.

It's always hard to say which night is the best because it all depends on audience, where we played the night before, was it a travel day, or a night off before the first show....ect! But generally I would say the second night is a safe bet.......our sound engineer had a night to get it right, we didn't have to travel the night before, and also we are generally more comfortable with one show under our belt. Maybe Phil's voice could be a little tired on a third night.....maybe not! These are just generalizations. It all depends really!

Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hello again Daryl,

Thoroughly enjoyed Twickenham gig, the other night. My question is where are the guitar and bass amps located on the stage? Are they "Behind the drums?" Also enjoyed your Bass "fills" which were a nice touch I thought. Hope to catch another show if time permit,s and am looking forward to the DVD.

Thanks for all the great music

Cintrepd

My amps are located under the stage facing backwards.  Mikes amps are located under the drum riser facing forward.

Best regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hello Daryl

I've seen 4 of the shows so far (with UK still to come).  You really look like you're enjoying every number you play but I wanted to ask you - which song or songs are your favourites to play on this tour so far? I love your solo in Ripples and the playing on Carpet Crawlers is so sweet.  Tell the guys that choosing that song to end the show was a great move!  I've always loved it and it moves me to tears at these recent gigs.

All the best for the rest of the tour. Richard

Hello Richard,
It's so hard to pick favorites, but I would have to say that I enjoy "The Duke Intro" and "Firth of Fifth" on the guitar and "Home By The Sea (part 1&2)" and "Domino"(part 2) on the bass. It's probably because they are the most challenging songs to play. Then again, in a different way "Ripples" and "Carpet Crawlers" are such gorgeous and tasteful songs. Choosing a favorite Genesis song is like asking, "which one of your children do you love most"?

See you in the UK!

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl!!!

I was in Bern, and the show was great!!! With the rain too!!! You was fantastic,as ever!!! But... i noticed (i'm not the only one!) an audio-problem during your guitar solo on "The cage final section"... In the exact moment when you start with the solo(i imagine you turn on some guitar's effect...),you simply are not there! I mean...where's gone to hiding the sound of your guitar? We can't hear you! The strange thing is that this "audio-problem" was too in ALL (yes,all...) the videoclip of "In the cage 2007"(some really good as quality) on "Youtube

Daryl's reply:

I think that has changed just recently. The sound engineer is now aware of it. We've received a few Emails about it. He is now putting the guitar volume up in the mix for that moment. I appreciate your concern! Thank you!

Best regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hey!

Just saw you in Linz and Prague, FANTASTIC shows... thanks a lot!  I noticed
you were looking pretty good! How do you stay so fit on tour and at home,
and am I imagining it or did I see an article about you somewhere in a
fitness magazine?

Keep rocking!  Especially on that Firth of the FIfth solo!
Kristin

Daryl's reply:
Hello Kristin,

Yes I did an interview for a "Fitness Together" magazine. It's a personal training program I'm part of when I'm home. Thank god for nice gyms in some of the hotels we stay at. See you out there!

mllumbkin asks:

I was wondering what brand of guitar did Daryl play w/ Gino on the late 70s tour, the violin shaped one?

Daryl's reply:

It was a custom built guitar by a Milwaukee luthier named Robert Pascoe. It was called "The
Archer"(1979)!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

I was just watching the video for "Urban Island" and was ever so impressed!  I'm really starting to get into your catalog of work - I think you are brilliant! I have played guitar for about 25 years off and on, but it's never been a consistent thing. I pick it up and play for a few months with great passion, then I put it down again and probably don't touch it for a year or more.
As a professional musician, do you ever find your desire to play running in cycles where you just want step back for a while and take a break, or have you always been consistent?

Best regards,
Gina (aka mattersfact2) Charlotte, NC

Hello Gina,
I have to say that I have never taken a long break from playing......other than when I would go on a  vacation. I don't bring my guitar intentionally. Sometimes when I'm writing for a new album I tend to write more on the keyboard. Other than that, I'm totally addicted to music, guitar, recording, ect....!
Best regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

I want to say that you are one of the greatest guitar players of the world. I have all your records and many friends of me asked me when we listing to the music. Whaauw who is that fellor on the guitar. I was looking to the program of The north Sea Jazz and was hoping that You wil be one of the guest. Are yoy having plans to visit Holland for concerts in the next years?.

Ben from Netherlands

Hello Ben,

As of now I have no plans to play The North Sea Jazz, but things can change. I am planning on  touring Europe after the Genesis tour. It's just being talked about now. Hopefully 2008 could be a possibility.

Best regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,
I've been listening to "Retrofit" a lot lately, excellent recording.  On your old site you had the specific gear you used on each track for this record.  Don't get me wrong I love the new site, I was just wondering if the old gear page is archived anywhere.  The tones are superb!

thanks Matt

Hello Matt,
I'm sorry to say the specific gear info for "Retrofit" is gone*. It was up there for quite a while.  When you get a chance check out my new CD "Go". It's like "Retrofit" on steroids! Best regards,
Daryl Stuermer

I looked into this a bit more, and found the information in question HERE -Your friendly neighborhood Webmaster

Hi Daryl!

Finally the tour is started!
I read on the Genesis forum the setlist of Bruxells's show,is great!
but...
One quick question about it:
Where are gone the 2 surprise songs about it Chester and you said that was
NEVER played before???
Genesis changed mind?or will be in the next gigs?
I really hope! And i i'm little disappoint for none song from Abacab...
But said this,it's fantastic!!!

See you soon in Bern!!!

All the best!!!

Francesco from Italy.

Hello Francesco,

Whatever we played in the Bruxells dress rehearsal on Monday will be
the songs we play on the tour. As we go along the order could be
changed a little. That will be determined after a few shows.

Best regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

I have a couple of more questions to ask you. First will you guys be doing a movie theater deal in the USA like you guys are doing in Europe? Also when will you be showing photos from the rehearsals? I'll be going to the Boston Show. Can't wait to see you guys in Boston MA.
Best Wishes,
Brian

Hello Brian,

I have no knowledge of the movie theater deal in the USA. I would tell you if I knew!

The management is discouraging putting photos on our websites before we start touring as not to reveal the new stage production yet. I will try to get a few candid photos behind the scenes and behind the stage. I will say that it is the biggest stage production Genesis has ever had. It's quite overwhelming! Our actual playing area is the smallest we've ever had, and we all like it better this way. We are all quite close up there. Makes it easier to communicate musically and verbally. Feels like your in a band rather than a big Las Vegas show. It's going to be great!

Best Regards,
Daryl

Daryl,

Will phil be singing any songs on the drums on the new tour?

Hello Brian,
Phil is playing a bit more drums than on previous tours and so far we have rehearsed one song he'll be singing from behind the drums.
Best Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl.
Love and greetings from the East coast of Scotland. Firstly, I originally started my love of Genesis when I bought the CD of The Way We Walk (Live). Your interpretation of the Firth of Fifth is what dragged me into my love of Genesis. I could go on, but my question is this :-

Since a child, when I first heard in the Air Tonight, I have always loved the opening chord. I have recorded my own version. However, that damned Dm chord...you seem to play it low down on the fretboard. How exactly do you finger that chord when you play it? I tend to play the barred version, but it doesn't have that same feel. Also, if I may be so cheeky to slip in a related question, how do you get that metallic sustained tone, is that down the combo of the distortion and verb effects you have previously detailed?

Love and eternal respect from a Stuermer wannabe, from Scotland. Chris.

Hello Chris,

Here's how I played the opening chord on "In The Air Tonight". It's not a full Dm chord.
It's just for 4 lower strings.

A (5th fret on the 6th string)
D (5th fret on the 5th string)
A (7th fret on the 4th string)
D 7th fret on the 3rd string)

When we recorded it in December 1980 I used an old British made Coloursound Tone Bender for the distortion. They don't make them anymore. I now use a Fulltone Soul-Bender to get a similar sound. It's actually less noisy and a better quality distortion pedal. You can get to Fulltone pedals from my website under the Links page. I hope this helps!

Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

I know you can't say what the songs are but could you say what percent of the set is pre-78 material for the new tour?  Is there anything at all from before '73?

Hello Dave,

I'm sorry I can't say what percentage from 1973 to 1992 since some
songs are in medley form. But I will say that it will probably be a
similar percentage as the "Invisible Tough"/"We Can't Dance" tour.
I'm not saying that we are doing the same songs as those tours. We
are already talking about changing some things from our original 2
week get together in New York (in October).

I appreciate your wanting to know! I hope this helps a bit!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl.

You've been using the Yamaha TRB-4 bass for a long time and you're gonna use it again on the upcoming Genesis tour. Is it your favorite bass guitar?(why?)

Do you enjoy playing the bass as much as playing the guitar?

And one last question: Which is the most difficult Genesis song to play on bass guitar?

Thanks a lot.

Ciao
Marco

Hello Marco,

I've just switched from my Yamaha bass to a Lakland 4-94 bass (with
some custom features). They are a great company based in Chicago.
www.lakland.com

I consider the bass my second instrument and enjoy playing it in live
performance with Genesis as well as on my albums. I've learned a lot
playing with Leland Sklar who I consider my favorite bass player.

None of the Genesis songs are technically difficult to play
necessarily. I just think of some songs as more challenging than
others. In that case I would say "Second Home By The Sea" or "Domino-
Part 2" are the most challenging!

See you out there on the tour!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,
I heard you on the radio saying sometimes Mike
Rutherford would ask if you wanted to play guitar on some of the
newer stuff while he played bass.  Since Mike has his guitars in
Drop D tuning, do you try to play his parts exactly in that tuning
or do you play them in normal tuning live onstage?

Hello Frank,

I play everything in standard tuning.
Mike is use to drop D tuning and plays almost every song that way.

Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Just listened to Daryl's radio interview re: Genesis tour.
I have tickets for Toronto and Looking forward to seeing the gang again!
My question is the Max Webster reference that Daryl made,
What time period was he and his brother in?
Prior to the 1st record?
I have worked with Kim Mitchell a couple of times for TV stuff and have seen Max 7 times.(Only after the 1st album/Paul Kearsy period).
Thanks
Mike Fisher

Hello Michael,

My brother Duane and I moved to Windsor, Canada for a summer (probably in '72 or '73) to form a band with bassist Mike Tilka. Prior to that Mike was substituting for another bass player in a Milwaukee band my brother and I were involved with. Duane and Mike were going to share the vocals & bass, sometimes switching off on various instruments (like guitar & keyboards). I wrote 2 instrumental songs titled, "Family At Max", and "Song For Webster". Mike came up with combining the 2 song titles to make "Max Webster"! Duane and I eventually moved back to Milwaukee due to the lack of work and formed the band "Sweetbottom". "Max Webster" went on with Mike with an entirely different line up of musicians and musical direction and became quite a successful band in Canada. Everything turned out well for everybody! Some years ago I heard actor Mike Meyers mention "Max Webster" on a late night talk show. Apparently he was a big fan. Things turned out pretty well for him too! See you in Toronto! Best Regards, Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

Just curious about the Gibson ES346 guitar, its sound like a ES335, can you tell a bit on this guitar as I cannot find any information on Gibson website or blue book. Is it a custom-made guitar for you or a production model?

Regards,
Tony

Hello Tony,

I purchased one of the first ES346 guitars from a Gibson
representative. They were built at the Gibson Custom Shop. I'm not
sure about this but I believe they don't make the Gibson ES346
anymore......at least under the original name. If they do it's now
called the Paul Jackson Jr. Signature Model. Check this Gibson Custom
Shop Artist link:  http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/
signature/jacksonjr/PaulJacksonJr.html

I hope this helps!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi there Daryl!
My name´s Daniel
I´d like to ask you a few things (more technical stuff) about your
playing.
What effect arrengment do you use for solo performance, or to
create sounds like in the song "In the Air Tonight" from the Phil
Collins farewell tour. At last, what Fender model do you use in Live.
That´s about it, I´m forming a Progressive Rock Band and been
collecting infomation about great guitar sounds and off course,
great players.
If you can answer me, I´ll appreciate it.
Thanks anyway.

Dear Daniel,

On "In The Air Tonight" the effects pedals I use is the Fulltone Soul-
Bender for the distortion sound and a Boss DD-5 digital delay. I'm
playing a Fender Eric Clapton Strat.

Check out "Gear Talk" on my website for more info. I have photos of
the pedalboards I use in different situations.

Good luck with your new band!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

I am a strat player for years and I love your sound very much.
Just have some questions on your gear:
1) Do you run your chorus and delay in the effect loop of your
mesa boogie or before the amp as the last effects of your pedal-
array?
2) Do you get your distortion from your amp or just the pedal or
both?

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Tony,

1) I do not use the effects loop on my amps. I run my Boss DD-5
digital delay to the Boss CE-5 chorus or Fulltone Choralflange
(depending on which pedalboard) stereo out before the 2 Mark 1 Mesa/
Boogies as the last effects.

2) I get my main lead & solo distortion from pedals. I run through
the clean channel of my amps. At the present time I am using Radial

Hi Daryl.

I like the Sweetbottom live album very much. Will you ever get together again in the future? That would be awesome. Do you remember your set up? Where did the overdrive come from - the amp or a pedal? What a tone!!! Have a good time on the road with Genesis!

Cheers Marco

Hello Marco,

It's always possible that Sweetbottom would do another reunion. There is no plan at this time. On the live recording I used a Mesa/Boogie Heartbreaker Amp Head with a Mesa 2x12 Rectifier speaker enclosure with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. The overdrive pedal was an Ibanez Tube King followed by a Boss DD-5 Digital Delay.

Hi,

one quick question for profesional player!! Regarding Volume pedal, I have active electronics on my guitar and want to buy Ernie Ball Junior pedal, there is 6181 which is for active and 6080 which is for passive instruments. Based on your experience, which one would you recomend me for active? Thanks.

Thank you

Hello Andej,

I have always used a passive volume pedal. I own 3 Ernie Ball and 4 Ernie Ball Junior volume pedals. They are all great but I like the Juniors because they take up less space on the pedalboards. I have active electronics in my Strat and I've never had a problem.

Hi there,

Although I love Phil Collins, I'm more into heavier bands like Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Sabbath etc. but I must say that Phil Collins - LIVE & LOOSE IN PARIS is the best DVD/Live Show I've got in my collection of about 200 dvd's. There for I got interrested in your sound & setup.

My gear is as follows:

Joe Perry les paul
Dunlop ZW-45 wah
Radial TRIMODE
Digitech BAD MONKEY
Boss GE-7 (solo boost)
Boss CH-1 super chorus
Boss TR-2 tremelo
Boss DD-3
Boss DD-6
Boss TU-2 tuner
Peavey CLASSIC 50 (2x12)

What I wanna know is how does the HOT BRITISH pedal hold up live??? Do you use it at hi gain settings etc.

Thanx Your sincerly

Reinart - South Africa Scott

Hello Reinhart,

Since that Phil Collins show and DVD was filmed back in 1997/98 my setup has changed. My current setup is listed on my website under "Gear Talk". I also just recently put up photos of the pedalboards I use in different situations. My Hot British pedal has held up well so far and I do use it in the high gain mode. I own a Trimode as well. Although it's not on my pedalboard (I ran out of room), I do use it for recording. By the way, your equipment setup looks great. I bet it sounds great too!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi daryl

I was wondering if you play any other acoustic guitars other than the takamines? Are they your acoustic of choice?

many thanks.
Scott

Hello Scott,

Besides the Takamine acoustics I also play the Godin nylon and steel string acoustics, and the  Sadowsky Nylon String Electric Solid Body. What I decide to play always depends on the song really. They all have their own sound and feel. I like them all for different reasons.
Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl--

My husband and I (from Wauwatosa, WI) are so excited that you and Genesis will be back! In fact, Genesis at the Rosemont in IL in October 1986 was our very first date and here we are 20+ years, married with 3 kids, still in Wauwatosa--THANKS! Anyway, we've seen you every time we can when you were in or near Milwaukee...will Genesis be anywhere near your hometown on this tour? Thanks for bringing us together, and thanks for all your contributions to local music! You have two big fans right here in Milwaukee!

Cindy Lessila

Dear Cindy,

I guess music really does bring people together! The North American tour schedule hasn't been revealed to me yet. I imagine we'd get to Chicago at least. We have always played Chicago in every past US tour. Milwaukee is usually on the schedule as well. All I know at this time is that we are touring Canada and the US in September and October. I hope to see you there! Daryl

Hi Daryl.

I really like the "Seriously Live in Berlin" DVD (my hometown) Your sound on this one is amazing. I would like to know what kind of amp and effects you were using. I think the guitar was a Clapton Strat with Lace Sensor Gold pick-ups.

Thanks a lot
Marco

Hello Marco,

Yes, it was the Clapton Strat with Lace Sensor Gold pick-ups. I used a Seymour Duncan amp with 2 EV 12" speakers. I used the 1st channel for a clean sound and the 2nd channel for overdrive lead and solo sounds. For delay effect I used a Roland SDE-3000 digital delay. For chorus effect I used a Boss Chorus pedal.
Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hello Rich,
Here are your questions and my answers below them.

Q. I love all your solo albums, (you are truly a great composer and musician) is there a time frame on a new album of original material? Any plans for a live c.d. or dvd?

A. There will be a new solo album released in Spring on InsideOut Music.

Q.  I have no plans for a live CD or DVD at this time, but I am always recording live performances as I go along. I know there will be a live CD or DVD in the future.
I have had the pleasure of seeing one solo show of yours in California a few years back, have you had any luck finding a promoter to get you more exposure to venues outside the Milwaukee area.

A. I think with a new label behind me it will be much more possible to play venues around North America and Europe. We are already talking about some dates outside the US in the future.

Q. Who were your early musical likes and influences? What other guitar players do you admire and lastly what are your current listening preferences.

A. My earliest influences were the guitar instrumental group "The Ventures", Duane Eddie, Scotty Moore (played with Elvis, Rick Nelson, ect). Then I got into blues guitarists like BB King, Albert King, Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop...ect. After that it was jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, Kenny Burrell,...ect. Then came Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. They opened up the rock guitar like no one else. The fusion era was a big influence with guitarists like John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell. Today there are such a talented group of guitarists out there. The people that immediately come to mind are: Allan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Greg Howe, Pat Metheny, .....ect. There are too many to list!
As far as what I am listening to today - I love the new Bruce Hornsby-Intersections album. I'm also listening to the Genesis songs I have to know for the tour.
I'm very happy Genesis will be touring again. I look forward to seeing everyone at the shows!

Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl,

loved you work on the GRP Christmas collections "The Little Drummer Boy." What guitar and equipment did you use? Also,, will you be in the Long Island NY Area this coming year??

Thanks , and love all your songs!!
Jamey

Hello Jamey,

I used a (black) Steinberger guitar and a Seymour Duncan 1/12 combo amp. My friend guitarist Lee Ritenour loaned the amp to me for the session. Any reverb or delay effects were done post from the mixing console. As far as plans to visit the Long Island NY area - not at this time..........but I'm sure Genesis will get to New York on the US tour in Sept/Oct 2007.

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Thanks for the great music over the years. I'm from Buffalo ,and I've seen you play with Gino Vanelli, Jean-Luc Ponty and Genesis and Phil Collins solo tours. My question is about when you played with Allan Holdsworth in Jean- Luc's band. How did you know when to play. I know Allan dislikes playing anything the same way, how did you know when to come in? Did Jean-Luc write those specific parts or did you guys improvise?

Thank You,
Dan

Hello Dan,
Jean-Luc Ponty always directed the way things would go musically. Sometimes he wrote it out on music manuscript paper or played it to you on piano or violin. Jean-Luc's music was well arranged and allowed improvisation at specific points of the song. Allan Holdsworth did only the one album and one live performance with us and then left the band. Allan is better off in his own band where his music allows the freedom he desires. I will also add that Allan was the most interesting and original guitarist I ever played with.

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl

I also own a Godin lgx .How did your involvement with the Godin company come about?

Hello Scott,
Phil Collins bassist (Leland Sklar) invited some representatives he knew from Godin to a show in Toronto. I met them after the show and I expressed an interest in trying the LGXT guitar. They sent me one and I loved it. That's how it all started!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

I wanted to ask you , were you the guitar player on Gino Vannelli  "brother to brother"?
I love your new stuff, thanks... Joe...

Hello Joseph,

I played guitar on the Gino Vannelli 1979 "Brother To Brother Tour"! There is a live video DVD of that tour. The album "Brother To Brother" came out in 1978. Carlos Rios plays guitar on that album. I was on my first tour with Genesis in 1978.
Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

happy holidays to the urban island gang.  looking forward to the  29th. :)

a question arose on the genesis forum asking of daryl's and  chester's roles within the live band, "are they yes-men?" my question to daryl is:  how much flexibility/license are you  given to work your guitar bits into the songs? if they do 'throwing it all away' or 'no son of mine' (which they  most probably certainly will -- one if not the other) for my ears  it will be an incredible waste of live time with the band if we  didn't get to hear the good dr. d's rip roaring solos that close  out both those tracks.
(hint hint)
leslie

Hello Leslie,

I understand your question. I get that one quite often.
There is always specific musical phrases or melody lines in a song that are signature to that song and have to be there. I try to play what is nessessary and appropriate for the song. At least I hope I'm experienced enough to know what to play and what not to play. One always works within the parameters that are there - although Mike, Tony, or Phil may suggest something for me to play or maybe even ask me to add more - but on the most part I'm left on my own to decipher what works best. The way I play "No Son Of Mine" or "Throwing It All The Way" on my solo album works in that instrumental environment. But I thank you for suggesting that Genesis add my solo's to the end of those 2 songs. But lets face it - I don't want to take the spotlight away from Phil! :)

Best Wishes,

Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl!
I'm so happy to see you in concert with Genesis next year!
I will go in Berna, because in Rome will be free concert and i

I wish to ask you,if i can:I know that you can't talk about the
set-list of hte show,and i don't wanna know,i prefer surprise!
But...you can say only if there's some hope Genesis will play

Dear Francesco,

We are all looking forward to the tour as well!
See you in Berna!

Hi Daryl
Got the family my Genesis tickets at Twickenham.
First time for the kids to see Genesis live.
Really looking forward to it!  I've seen you with Genesis many
many times over the years, glad you still enjoy going on the road
with them.
Can you give any hints what you will be playing on the set??!!
Regards
David

Hello David,

You can hear about some of the songs we'll be playing by watching
the Genesis press conference or listening to my WKLH radio interview.
You can access both of these on my website. I don't feel I should
reveal more than what's been said already. Some things should be a
surprise!

Looking forward to the tour as well!

Best Regards,

Daryl Stuermer

Paul wrote:
Is it possible to find out which guitar Daryl would have used in the
guitar solo on 'Firth of fifth' at Earl's court London with Genesis in the
early 90's. That solo still sends shivers down my spine and has inspired
my son to take up lead guitar with his newly formed band.

Dear Paul,
The guitar solo on "Firth Of Fifth" at Earl's court London with Genesis was played on a (red) Fender Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster. Good luck with your son's new band. I don't know how old he is, but I had my first band at 12 years old. I started playing guitar at 11. Best Regards, Daryl

Two questions, Genesis has announced a tour-will you join them, and when
are you going to treat the fans in the northwoods ( Minocqua ) with your
talent live?
Peace, Brian

Daryl's reply:
Yes, I will be with Genesis on the 2007 Tour! If you go to my website
www.darylstuermer.com you can listen to the WKLH interview I did the
morning of the announcement.
As far as booking a gig in Minocqua - I would love to play there -
but as far as I know you're the first person who has asked me to play
there. I'm willing to play anywhere that will have me.
Thanks for your Email!

Hi Daryl!
Please...please talk to Tony smith and Phil and convince them to do at
least one show in Israel..
Please...and this time,Don't sleep at the DAN hotel in Tel Aviv...There
are better hotels in Tel Aviv...
We are waiting for you,so please try to do somthing.
Genesis has never been played in Israel.
Eran.

Dear Eran,
I would love to go back to Israel. I had a great time when we played
there with Phil Collins last year. The people treated us great and
audience was terrific! We also took a day trip to Jerusalem on our
day off.
By the way, I agree with you that the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv wasn't
the best.
I'll put in a good word for Israel.
Thanks for your Email!
Daryl Stuermer

Hi Daryl. Nice to know you'll once again be joining Phil, Mike and Tony on
the Genesis TIOA Tour next year.  I have one question- do you know what
gear you'll be using on the tour next year?  I know you're a busy guy and
I don't expect a response, but if I get one it would be fantastic.
Best of luck!
Your fan
Jibril from Va.

Dear Jibril,
I'll be listing my equipment set up in the near future in the "gear
talk" section of the website. I'll include guitars, basses, amps,
effects pedals, ..........etc! I would list it now but I'm still in
the process of putting equipment together for the 2007 rehearsals.
I'm looking forward to the tour for sure!
Best Regards,
Daryl Stuermer
